Query fan-out tool: see the searches behind an AI answer

Type a question your buyers ask. The tool writes the searches an AI engine would run before answering it, from rewordings to comparisons to this year’s prices, and says what each one adds. Give it your page and it checks which of those searches the page already answers, quoting the sentence that shows it.
How wide to fan out

A simulation of the searches an AI engine runs, written by a model that searches the web first. Free, no signup.

How it works

Free, no signup. About 5 seconds, or 15 with a page.

  1. Enter the question

Write it the way a buyer would ask ChatGPT or Google. Pick AI Overviews for a narrow fan-out or AI Mode for a wide one.

  2. A model reads the web, then fans it out

Perplexity’s Sonar searches first, so the searches use the words people in your field use, then writes 8 or 14 of them, each labelled with what it adds.

  3. Check your page against them

Optional. We read your page as a crawler does and mark each search answered, partly answered or not answered, with the passage from your page that shows it.

Simulated. No engine publishes the searches it runs for a given person, so these are the ones a model that read the web for this question expects. Run it twice and some searches will differ, as they do for the engines.

What query fan-out is

When Google launched AI Mode in May 2025 it described the method as query fan-out: the question is broken into subtopics and many searches are run at once on the user’s behalf. AI Overviews do a smaller version of the same thing, and ChatGPT search and Perplexity also run several searches before they write.

For a page, that changes what ranking means. The engine picks sources for each sub-search, so a page that only answers the head question competes for one slot in the answer, and a page that also answers the price question, the limits question and the comparison competes for several.

The six kinds of search

  • Reformulation. The same need in other words, the way someone else would type it.
  • Related. A neighbouring question the answer would also cover.
  • Implicit. What the person needs but did not ask: price, limits, setup, who it suits.
  • Comparative. A versus or alternatives search.
  • Entity. One named product, company or standard the answer has to mention.
  • Recency. Current information: this year, the latest changes.

In the example above, all three misses are implicit or comparative searches. That is not surprising: a writer answers the question that was asked and stops. They are also the searches where an engine has to look past the vendor’s own page.

How to use the result

Run your most important buying question at AI Mode width, with the page you most want cited. Read the misses first. Then take a few of the searches to the AI Overview checker to see which sites Google links for them today: those pages are the competition for each slot, and often the places a mention of you would do the most good.

Every day, not once

AI citation tracking

The fan-out predicts what an engine might search. CueScout records the pages ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI actually cite for your buying questions, every day, and sorts them by the ones you could get onto.

Questions

What is query fan-out?

The way AI search engines answer a question: instead of one search, they run several narrower ones (a reworded version, a price check, a comparison, a search about a named product) and write the answer from the pages those return. Google described AI Mode this way when it launched in May 2025, and ChatGPT search works the same way.

Are these the searches Google actually runs?

No one outside Google can see those for a given person, so this is a simulation, and the page says so on every result. The searches are written by Perplexity’s Sonar model, which reads the web before it answers, so they use the terms people in your field search with. Treat them as a well-informed list of what an engine is likely to look up, not a log.

What is the difference between the AI Overviews and AI Mode settings?

Width. An AI Overview is a short answer and fans out narrowly, so that setting writes 8 searches. AI Mode writes a longer, researched answer and fans out wider, so that setting writes 14.

How do you decide whether my page answers a search?

We read the page the way a crawler does, without running JavaScript, and a second model judges each search against the text. Any search it marks answered or partly answered has to come with a passage from your page, and we check that passage is really there before showing it. For a search about a named product, if the name is nowhere on your page, it is marked not answered whatever the model said.

What should I do with the searches my page misses?

Decide which ones a buyer reading your page would expect answered, then answer them where they would look: a price in plain numbers, a short section on limits, a fair comparison. Not every miss belongs on the same page; some are better as their own post that links back.

Why are the searches different when I run it again?

Because the engines vary too. A fan-out is written fresh for every question, so the exact wording shifts between runs while the types of search stay much the same. Run it two or three times if you want the fuller set.

Do you keep what I type?

Each run is logged with the question, the page URL if you gave one, and what came back, so we can spot abuse and see which tools get used. It is not tied to an account and nobody emails you unless you ask for the report below the result.

Track it every day instead of once

CueScout runs these checks on a schedule and turns the gaps into To-dos.
